Welcome to ASFB 2024 — ASN Events

Welcome to ASFB 2024

On behalf of the organising committee, we would like to welcome you to Newcastle for ASFB 2024!
AFSB recognise Indigenous people as the traditional custodians and occupants of our land and water, and that they have a spiritual, environmental, social, cultural and economic relationship with their traditional fish and fisheries. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.

We hope you enjoy the laid-back coastal vibes, tasty restaurants, great bars and live music.

This year's theme, 'Fish Frontiers' will feature the suite of contemporary research and management talks across freshwater and marine ecosystems that ASFB is renowned for, however this year will feature special sessions and themes involving:

  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

  • Stock assessment and Harvest Strategies

  • Challenges and risks and fisheries management

  • Innovations in habitat restoration

  • Advancing Fish Passage

  • Fish protection screening

  • Extreme frontiers - understanding and managing fish and aquatic ecosystems in a more extreme world

  • Big beasts, gentle souls - Australian Freshwater cods

  • Conservation of Threatened Species

  • Diversity, inclusivity and excellence in our society and more broadly

  • Innovative and ethical tagging of animals in research

  • Three-minute theses from some of our leading student members

Our hope is to bridge tradition and innovation as we continue our collective exploration of new discoveries, ideas, visions and best practices.
Together, we can chart a course for a more sustainable future for fish and people!
