Patrick ‘Paddy’ Burke is a marine ecologist with a passion for understanding the complexities of ocean predators, particularly elasmobranchs. His interdisciplinary research integrates movement ecology, trophic ecology, and sensory biology to holistically describe the lives of marine fishes. Paddy applies techniques such as satellite telemetry, stable isotope and fatty acid analysis, and stomach content assessment to investigate ecological patterns. He is also leading innovative research using elemental profiling via portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) to identify species and geographic origin of both shark and marlin tissues. This novel work supports conservation, seafood traceability, and efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and forms the focus of his current presentation.
